There are some very simple steps to put you right on track to achieving weight loss effectively. What many people do as they begin weight loss journeys is that they set their bar so high that it is very hard to achieve their goals in a reasonable amount of time. Here are a few weight loss tips that can dramatically make your journey easier.

First, you need to take a moment and be honest with yourself. What do you need to lose? What caused you to gain weight in the first place? Do you have any bad eating habits you need to overcome into achieve your healthy weight? Do you want to make your weight loss journey public to friends and family? Second, you need start slowly with realistic goals. If you have a very busy day, just jumping on the treadmill for five minutes is easy—essentially, it’s hard to not reach your goal period. That hardest part about exercising is getting yourself motivated to get on the treadmill, but once you’re on, you will find it easy to convince yourself to walk for much longer.

Third, allow flexibility to your routine. There is no law in the book of weight loss that says you need to run for thirty minutes straight without taking a breather. If you need to take breaks in your exercises, do it. You’re not competing with anyone because you are doing this for yourself, not anyone else. If you slip up and fall off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up. It happens to everyone whether they want to admit it or not. Forgive and let go, and then jump right back into your routine.

Fourth, get plenty of sleep. Sleep is an essential part of your life, so it is important that you take time to get enough sleep every single day. Too little sleep prevents your body from “recharging” and can significantly decrease your metabolism. Your body thinks that because you cannot get enough sleep that something is wrong and is potentially being threatened, therefore slowing your metabolism, leading to less energy burn later in the day. Inadequate sleep also does not allow your body to find release for the stress you experience daily. On top of this, lack of sleep leads to an increase of fat storage because of your body’s inability to release stress effectively during times of rest.

Fifth, allow yourself to unwind and get rid of stress. Stress is a factor in so many health problems that it is not surprising that weight gain is one of them. Stress puts your body in a defensive mode that forces the potential energy (food) you bring into your body to be stored into fat instead of burning it immediately. Your body thinks it is in harm’s way so it does everything it can to prepare for the worse, which storing fat is very efficient way for it to so. However, excessive weight can cause a great deal worse health problems. Those with high stress can suffer from great deal of bodily complications from high blood pressure to insomnia to depression to weight gain. All examples, of course, but it is good to recognize finding ways to manage stress healthily could reduce some health problems you are probably experiencing even now.

Sixth, reward yourself when you reach your goals. You’re rewards should not be completely food bases. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself to a dessert every now and again, but it is smart to not overdo it. Instead of food rewards, treat yourself to a day out or a new shirt or shoes.
